Maria Bang Espersen

Maria Bang Espersen (1981) is a Danish-Swedish artist living and working in Southern Sweden. For the past ten years, Espersen has exhibited internationally at numerous institutions, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum in the US and her sculptures are placed in several museum collections, counting both the Victoria and Albert Museum (UK), Corning Museum of Glass (US), and Rakusuitei Art Museum and Gardens (JP). Her rapidly made sculptures are situated within a space occupied by the two opposites, control and serendipity. By focusing on unconventional fabrication processes, Espersen aims to physically manifest her interest in deconstructing existing hierarchies conventional glass making is based on following precise and restrictive rules, but she purposefully disrupts those notions by creating objects that are made fast and with the least amount of restrictions possible.
